David Klein Gallery Hosts Celebratory Grand Opening Weekend

One of Michigan’s most respected galleries is bringing new energy and fresh momentum to the city of Ferndale. David Klein Gallery, long recognized as a force in both Michigan and the national contemporary art world, will officially open its new gallery headquarters at 678 Livernois with a two day grand opening celebration on Friday, July 11, 2025, beginning at 5 PM and continuing into the evening, and on Saturday, July 12, from 12 PM to 6 PM. The opening exhibition features new work by Ferndale-based artist Susan Goethel Campbell and Detroit-based artist Ebitenyefa Baralaye.

The celebratory opening event on Friday evening includes a selection of wines by Elie Wine Company. Owner Elie Boudt, is a Ferndale resident and gallery neighbor. Sounds provided by At the Moment (atm). Complimentary valet parking will be available.

On Saturday the selection of wines by Elie Wine Company continues. There will be an artist talk and gallery walk-through with Susan Goethel Campbell at 1:00 PM. Exhibitions run through August 23.

• Susan Goethel Campbell, Soundings. Goethel Campbell is a multi-disciplinary artist. Her work considers the engineered environment as a natural process and is realized in several formats, including prints, drawings, photographs, video and installation.

• Ebitenyefa Baralaye, Foundations. Ebitenyefa Baralaye is a ceramicist, sculptor, designer, and educator. His work explores cultural, spiritual, and material translations of objects, text, and symbols interpreted through a diaspora lens and abstracted around the aesthetics of craft and design.

We’re absolutely thrilled to welcome the renowned David Klein Gallery to Ferndale,” said Community and Economic Development Director Roger Caruso. “The gallery’s move brings an incredible depth of artistic prestige to our already vibrant Livernois Avenue, full of galleries, restaurants, and independent boutiques. Ferndale has long been a creative hub, and David Klein’s presence amplifies that energy.”

The move to Ferndale consolidates yet expands the gallery’s operations from its previous Birmingham and Detroit locations into a single, 3,000-square-foot space that has been completely transformed from a former warehouse into a modern, naturally lit gallery environment with dedicated parking for visitors.

“This move is not just about a new space, it’s about investing in Ferndale’s future as a destination for the arts,” said gallery founder David Klein. “With restaurants, cafes, photography studios, framing shops, and a growing creative community, Livernois is becoming a premiere art corridor for metro Detroit. We are thrilled to be part of that momentum and help bring even more visibility to the area. It’s energizing and exciting.”

For more than three decades, David Klein Gallery has helped shape and elevate Michigan’s contemporary art community while building a national reputation, participating in international art fairs in New York, Miami, Chicago, and Los Angeles. The gallery has placed significant works in major national and regional museums and in important private collections. David Klein himself is widely recognized as a leading voice in contemporary art. The gallery team includes: David Klein, Principal, Christine Schefman, Director, Haley Roberts, Assistant Director and Craig Hejka, Preparator.

"The addition of the David Klein Gallery is a wonderful compliment to the existing creative and artist fabric of Ferndale, which is sure to be seen and enjoyed by collectors and art enthusiasts from all over,” added Sommer Realy, Engagement Manger for Downtown Ferndale who also oversees the city’s public art programs. David Klein Gallery’s move is seen by many as a major moment for Ferndale’s arts district — adding significant weight and visibility to the neighborhood as it continues to grow as a cultural hub.

“The gallery’s move to Ferndale is a recognition of the community’s evolution as an artistic hub,” said Christine Schefman, longtime David Klein Gallery Director. “For decades, the gallery has been at the forefront of Michigan’s contemporary art scene. David’s decision to establish our headquarters here sends a strong message about Ferndale’s position as a creative community”.
