Press release
Possessing beauty and a luminous presence, Rosalind Tallmadge’s recent paintings alternatively excavate and add on layers of light-reflecting intervals with her use of silver and gold leaf and slices of mirrored mica. The mica, commonly found in igneous and metamorphic rock, offers a weighty counterpoint to the more delicate materials like glass beads and sequined fabric present in these compositions. The result is a shimmering organic beauty evocative of nature and the cosmos, presenting a feminine take on the historically male practice of formalism and abstraction.
Aside from the implicit politics of the medium, I want to create elusive, experiential paintings that activate the viewer’s body through their seductive light-based surfaces The pieces are meant to be organic, almost living beings that reveal themselves over time. They are both psychically interior and exterior, evoking degraded urban surfaces or worn rocks you would happen upon in nature.
